How RAID Level Affects Your Storage Cost
RAID 0 stripes data with no redundancy — usable capacity equals raw capacity, but any drive failure loses all data. RAID 1 mirrors data, so you need double the raw capacity for your usable target. RAID 5 uses distributed parity — typically around 1.33× raw capacity for a small array, tolerating one drive failure. RAID 10 mirrors striped pairs — like RAID 1, roughly double the raw capacity, but with better performance.
